In a new initiative this year, choreographer and dancer Matthew Hawkins will rove around the festival to present a series of five pre-show monologues reading fragments from his dance diary. In 2001 he was awarded the Chris de Marigny Dance Writers Award and has already left selected readers feeling very moved having “fallen off their chairs, and been rolling in the aisles”.
“Starting in the form of diary entries, uncanny nuggets of connected thought soon made themselves known on the page. It turned out my diverse dance actions ran parallel. Moreover, I needed to dance more, in order to feed the diary animal.”
- Matthew Hawkins
Matthew Hawkins turned out his feet and joined The Royal Ballet in 1977. He made his name as a freelance dancer and choreographer with thighs parallel (the contemporary idiom!). Working with Second Stride and the Michael Clark Company he appeared in Dance Umbrella for the first time in 1981. After two decades of wide-ranging and distinctive independent projects, he won the major Jerwood Choreography Award and subsequently received an Arts Council England Dance Artists Fellowship.
THIS IS STRICTLY A READING EVENT; NO DANCE OR CHOREOGRAPHY SHOULD BE EXPECTED.
